Hironori TERAI
Born on February 12, 1961 in Kagoshima Prefecture. In his twenties, he directed numerous Video Art projects and Music Videos. In his twenties he worked for MTV Japan as a promotional director and produced and directed many video projects. Received awards at the Sixth Hiroshima International Animation Festival and SIGGRAPH97.
I began working on this project in February of 1998.
At that time, the aftermath of the "Pikachu Scandal" was spreading through all areas of broadcast media like a disease and creating a very restrictive atmosphere.
I was feeling constricted and like I had no where to go.
I wanted to find a place in my mind where my imagination could run free.
I decided to use dreams as the main theme for this series.
I called numerous people and asked them to tell me their dreams.
From these dreams, I chose the ones with the most familiar themes, the repetitive scary dreams of childhood and the dreams that keep coming back to us even now.
I then took these stories and gave them to my production team to create the series.
This is a wonderful work about personal dreams that was able to utilizeanimation while still retaining the personality of the artist.
It is a work that reconfirms the expressive power of animation, a world in which everything is created by the artist.
At first glance it looks like it has been produced with conventional animation techniques, but notice the way digital technology is used to create adistinctive series of vignettes.
