URUSHIBARA Yuki
Born on January 23 in Yamaguchi. Blood type is "O". Won a Grand-prix of Afternoon Four seasons award in 1988, then began a serial comic "MUSHISHI" in Afternoon's seasonal extra number as her debut. Serialized the award winning "MUSHISHI" in Monthly Afternoon on alternate months.
I am very pleased to receive such a fine award. I would like to thank and share the delight with (title unknown) Miyazaki, the editor-in-charge who has worked with me on this story for a long time, the editorial staff of Afternoon who tolerates my being a slow writer, and my friends, who always help me. Thank you very much.
This comic book depicts with fine feeling the world of good old Japan where nature was thriving everywhere. Rain and snow falling over a village located deep in the mountains, people and animals living quietly veiled with a drifting fog and morning haze, and strange insects half-hidden among them. The author's accurate description and expression irresistibly engage readers into her unreal, fantastic world.
What kind of medium did you choose for your work when the first time you were aware of your "creation"?
A paper and pencil.
And, how old were you and what did you make?
I was in a junior high when I drew "manga" for the first time. I made parodies of manga.
Do you have any consistent subject matter or theme through your works?
I guess there is the matter of the "mystery of the existence" that I have been always attracted to through all my works.
When do you feel the connection with the technology in your creative activity?
What is the difference of the sense of Media Art from the one of traditional fine art?
Uh…I can't really relate to the technology.
How does your choice of medium affect on your works?
In another words, what kind of expression does your choice of medium allow you to make?
I would like to express my work in a natural form, which I have been working on since I was a child.
Do you feel that your theme of your works and the digital art will change along with the shift of the society?
I think my work will changes slightly under the influence of the shift in time.
What kind of field you are best at in your works?
And how do your works fit within and affect on this society?
I am best at visualizing images in my head. I guess my work will remain in the reader's heart as an influence on society.
What is your motto?
I don't know. Well...I am trying not to be influenced by just a "mood."
What kind of situation in every day life do you get inspired most?
I get inspired on many occasions, such as when I am looking at the landscape, taking a bath, or watching a TV.
What kind of vision do you have in your future development as the creator?
I would like to be faithful to the story I am working on.
Please name of the people or phenomena that you have got most influenced by as the creator.
Daisuke Igarashi
He taught me that I could do many things in manga. Speaking of the pictures, I was greatly influenced by him.
Scene of Setonaikai
I grew up by the Setonaikai. That's why I am attracted to scenes where people live in harmony with nature.
MASAYO chan
I started to draw under the influence of the girl next door, who was very good at drawing.
