It is really more honor than I deserve to receive this treasured prize. I still cannot believe my winning the prize when I look around the previous prize winners. I attribute my success to people's help and encouragement, and my friends' effort for great translation. I really appreciate those. In the days ahead, I will devote myself to establish BANDE as a standard in the 21st century!
This work makes one feel possibilities. Not only creator's personal possi- bilities, but also possibilities where a various ideas will be realized in near future when it is predicted visual matters lead all genres. It may be possible to realize two directions: one is visualizing one's imagination and the other is visual reconstruction of all the history with modern sophisticated technology. For example, scrupulous repro-duction of "THE BATTLE OF SEKIGA- HARA" based on historical evidence. This work opens a door to this direction.
What kind of medium did you choose for your work when the first time you were aware of your "creation"?
Colored pencils and coloring books.
And, how old were you and what did you make?
When I was two years old.
I had feelings of collaboration, variation, and improvisation... of course, I didn't know such words at that time, but I think I still got the sense.
Do you have any consistent subject matter or theme through your works?
The visualization of “time” in a “gap” of the plastic arts.
To create a structure for music.
Communication and dis-communication (the difficulty and importance of).
It is my ideal to express them totally.
I think it is one of the purposes of art, to record aspects of time.
When do you feel the connection with the technology in your creative activity?
What is the difference of the sense of Media Art from the one of traditional fine art?
I think art was media art when it was first born. In my opinion, the reason that fine art has traditionally been separated from the (mass)media is because media art is generally “completed by the audience”, which I think is a shackle; it is like reading a mystery novel without any clear ending. I think both art and media art need to have a layered structure for the audience to fully enjoy them, though the degree depends the maturity level of the audience.
How does your choice of medium affect on your works?
In another words, what kind of expression does your choice of medium allow you to make?
It has completely changes!
I have much appreciation for my former workplace, as it was there I learnt the skills I'm using now.
Do you feel that your theme of your works and the digital art will change along with the shift of the society?
I don't think that the theme of my work will change much. In fact, I think the history of humankind has remained pretty much the same. However, I want my work to be a kind of trigger to bring awareness of something new... so that people can still discover something in my book 100 years later.
What kind of field you are best at in your works?
And how do your works fit within and affect on this society?
My work has no influential power at the moment (laugh).
I want to acquire a “position” within society whilst I continue my creative activities.
What is your motto?
"A bad workman always blames his tools"
What kind of situation in every day life do you get inspired most?
I can feel a new development in my work, whilst I am outputting the data from my brain, which is when I am telling my wife about the concept of my work.
What kind of vision do you have in your future development as the creator?
To Make BANDE SCULPTÉE a standard of the media arts!?
I also want to work in collaboration with French artists such as Moebius, as I am living in France at the moment.
Are there any publishers out there interested in this? (Laugh)
Please name of the people or phenomena that you have got most influenced by as the creator.
Prince
A singer.
I wanted to name a more fashionable musician, but it seems that his music is already become my flesh and blood, including its "lighter aspects".
TSUTSUI Yasutaka
A novelist.
His books are full of ideas and ironies; I spend a good amount of time reading them.
TEZUKA Osamu
When I was a high school student, I wrote an essay about Phoenix and presented it in front of the whole school.
Wim Wenders
A film director. My favorite film of his is still Until the End of the World, though it is not as popular as some of his other works. It is one of the film's many charms that it only can be seen effectively on the big screen in the cinema.
Traveling around
Traveling around Europe and also traveling by motorcycle. I think that Òmoving" is at the very opposite of Òcreating", but also that they can bring synergy. I want to be like the wind.
