Kamichu! is a work in which I place the spotlight on one's junior-high school life when people are somewhere between childhood and adulthood. They do not have confidence but dream dreams of the future, or they are optimistic but have vague anxious thoughts. I made a plan of this work when I thought it would be interesting if one of the multitudinous gods from ancient Japan were thrown into the midst of junior-high students who live in the middle of such adolescence. I am very pleased with this work which has the pure finish of a film in which some slight memories of a time only recently past and our presently progressive thoughts are depicted.
There is no dramatic development or spectacle. What is depicted here is only a collection of mild and sweet episodes of a girl who became a "god" in a junior-high school in the countryside. But the artist's careful drawing of little daily affairs of the girls takes on distinct fertility and strange universality, such as, for example, ITO Jakuchu painting animals and plants on the water's edge with obsessive brushworks which can be said to be his special delight.
