KOBAYASHI Kazuhiko
Born in Shizuoka, 1979. Majored in visual arts in the Master's course at Tohoku University of Art & Design. Apart from pure 3-D CG animation, he studies CG presentation using photographed images which were taken by digital camera or digital video as motifs.
I am delighted with receiving a very honorable award. I would like to express my appreciation to many people who have given a spur to me on various occasions. In this work, I tried to see how unrealistic an image I could create while maximizing the sense of reality of photographed images. The method of creation is simple, but I got it through trial and error aiming to push the image to its utmost amusing state.
A Shinkansen train departed Yamagata Station. Usually, the image goes from one side to another when one uses a train for his or her presentation. However, in this work, the movement goes towards the center from the edge of a circle like a spinning-top. It is impressive that the expression of nature and the city is different and the movement of pale Japanese ink is beautiful. When the Shinkansen accelerates faster, viewers' eyes are made to spin. It is like being drawn into a black hole. Once one sees this work, it becomes very difficult to remove one's eyes from it, which is amazing. The simple setting is successful where the train starts in green Yamagata and gets closer to the urban area. The film ends with a view of a sign which says "Tokyo".
How old were you when you "created" something first time in your life? At that time, what did you create, and what kind of medium did you use?
I was 18 years old when I first experienced a clear intention to create. I used a synthesizer to compose music.
What kind of tools or medium do you use now? Please tell us the reason why you choose them.
At the moment, I am using computers, synthesizers, digital video cameras, and digital still cameras, primarily because these tools are relatively cheap, obtainable by anybody, and easy to use.
If you could get "dream tools/medium" for your creation, what do you wish to get?
A tool with the power to manipulate the world freely; for instance, a tool which can move the position of the sun, or change the direction of gravity, or a tool able to accelerate or reverse the passage of time in a particular locality and allow us to experience the result.
Do you have any consistent subject matter or theme through your works? If so, please explain us.
"Only one, but it is universal." To convey to people new and exciting experiences, which have never before been presented by anyone else.
Please tell us the most difficult or considerable part when you create your work.
It is important for me to keep trying to create things that nobody has ever made before, or to do things nobody has ever thought of; that is why I always have to struggle alone, which is the hardest part.
Have you ever felt that your work is a "media art"? Also, what is the difference between "media arts" and "traditional fine arts"?
I regard my work as a "media art" when it presents the original quality of the medium to the maximum. We perceive the tools of media arts to be multifaceted, and not just the means of any one type of expression, and so we search for new ways to apply them; I think that is a difference between the media arts and the traditional fine arts.
As an artist/creator, please tell us your approach, stance or point of view when you create your work.
I always confront each idea directly and work seriously. I believe that every silly little thing contains truth, which can be made visible by working in earnest.
What is your motto?
"A miracle occurs as the result of a chain of inevitabilities."
What kind of situation in every day life do you get inspired most?
From every aspects of daily life; I usually get inspirations from conversation or from the images that I see before me when I am thinking. I also often get inspired by the scenery I encounter when I am traveling.
What kind of vision do you have in your future development as the creator?
I would like to develop my work by entering a new field of study, so that, through experiencing different views and new senses of value, I can gain an even wider vision and understanding.
Please name of the people, things, or phenomena that you have got most influenced by as the creator.
Synthesizers :
I remember that I was fascinated by the idea that they are not only for playing music but also for creating sounds.
Computer graphics as moving images :
I used to think that computer graphics were only for video games, movies and commercial messages; I was amazed and impressed when I realized that there were CG works that were attractive in themselves, different from the ones I knew.
The Internet :
My horizons were broadened by the profound and sophisticated discussions of the anonymous Internet community. They were dislocated from one another, but still able to repeatedly have heated discussions about their common subject.
