Started collaborating at Kyoto University of Art and Design in 1998. Awarded Best Jingle Prize in CG Section at Multimedia Grand Prix in 1999. Established the creative unit TOCHKA in 2005. Awarded Special Prize at Ottawa International Animation Festival in 2006. Member of the C.A.P. (The Conference on Art and Projects)
This animation was created from a lighting doodle project through which we met various people in various places. The surprise and joy that brought life to the doodles linked one person with another. This communication naturally took form in the work. We would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the participants. This award has encouraged us to further spread the joy of creation among many more people.
Does animation offer only a place for a single person to express him/herself, or also can a number of people to share the excitement of creation? This work is the answer to my question. We can still find works that involve participation of a number of artists; however, such practice has been discontinued in Japan. I can directly perceive the excitement of the participants who enjoyed the residual images produced by lively lights. A work involving participation is likely to lose its focus; however, these artists, working behind the scenes, have a perfect control over the intensity of the animation. A clue to the future form of expression must be found in the artists' fearless activity in exploring possibilities.
How old were you when you "created" something first time in your life? At that time, what did you create, and what kind of medium did you use?
When I was in a kindergarten, I created a hand-operating side scroll shooting game in a box of snacks named “OTTOTTO.”

What kind of tools or medium do you use now? Please tell us the reason why you choose them.
Digital single-lens reflex camera. To take on the technology of historical silver salts camera, at the same time, also to get away from the process of printing, the ability to enjoy the image at the moment it was drawn became available.
If you could get "dream tools/medium" for your creation, what do you wish to get?
In my opinion, to realize a dream tool through a trial and error process is our role.
At this moment, it would be a kit which is ready to be enjoyed “PIKA PIKA” by everyone.

Have you ever felt that your work is a "media art"? Also, what is the difference between "media arts" and "traditional fine arts"?
It has never occurred to me, but the existing arts and presentation methods are great assets for us.
I am searching for a clue which produces interesting things in the hybrid of new media and established methods.

As an artist/creator, please tell us your approach, stance or point of view when you create your work.
In my view, arts exist for exhilarating people.
And I hope to share our activities and transmit amusement to others.

What is your motto?
To know new things, learn by studying the old.
What kind of situation in every day life do you get inspired most?
When I have a “conversation” with other people or things.
What kind of vision do you have in your future development as the creator?
It would be fun if a lot of people could enjoy “PIKA PIKA” widely and the whole world has a conversation by the drawing of images.
Please name of the people, things, or phenomena that you have got most influenced by as the creator.
NOPPO-san (Mr. bean pole) who starred in a handicraft program for children DEKIRUKANA (Can you do it?) on NHK educational channel from 1967 to 1990.
