HAYASHI Shunsaku
Born in Osaka, in 1992. A second year student at a junior high school in Osaka City. His personal exhibition held in Osaka and Tokyo in 2006 was well received. He was the winner of the Semi-Grand Prix at the EPSON Color Imaging Contest 2005. His work is expected to be published as a book in spring 2007.
Last year, my work was Recommended, but I was not satisfied. This year I was determined to do better, I thought to myself “this time for sure". A program about Gaudí on the television inspired me, flooding my mind with design ideas. I started constructing my idea on pieces of paper. I feel I allowed the spirit of Gaudí into my imagination through his long unfinished building. I was over the moon when I received the news by telephone that I had won the Encouragement Prize. Thank you very much.
Mr. HAYASHI has won several minor prizes over the last few years, but this year his work has been finally awarded the Encouragement Prize. Although still a junior high school student, his huge and detailed wall painting betrays no hesitation in execution and a degree of perfection in completion. His interpretation of Gaudí's unfinished work, Sagrada Familia, is also excellent. He says that he was inspired by a television program, but I recommend that he actually travel to Barcelona. Twenty years ago, I heard that it would be completed in one hundred years, but someone who visited the site recently also said the same thing. Perhaps nobody is really counting down; it is a building of mystery.
How old were you when you "created" something first time in your life? At that time, what did you create, and what kind of medium did you use?
When I was 6 years old, I was sticking colored paper and empty candy boxes with sticky tape.
What kind of tools or medium do you use now? Please tell us the reason why you choose them.
I am currently using "Photo Shop", because it is easy to color line drawings with it.
If you could get "dream tools/medium" for your creation, what do you wish to get?
A tool capable of retouching my line drawings.
Do you have any consistent subject matter or theme through your works? If so, please explain us.
Yes, I have, but I am not entirely sure what it is.
Please tell us the most difficult or considerable part when you create your work.
I always create large works. The line drawing is done on pieces of printing paper, which are stuck together. The hardest part is using a computer to do the coloring. However, I am most particular about my line drawing.
Have you ever felt that your work is a "media art"? Also, what is the difference between "media arts" and "traditional fine arts"?
I don't really think about it. Both analog and digital medium have their own advantages and style. I want to try many different forms of expression and push beyond established categories.
As an artist/creator, please tell us your approach, stance or point of view when you create your work.
To enthusiastically keep doing what I want to do, which is creating what I want to draw and make now.
What is your motto?
"A smooth sea never makes a skillful mariner."
"To each his own."
What kind of situation in every day life do you get inspired most?
When I am watching movies or reading books. I also get inspiration from history text books and such things.
What kind of vision do you have in your future development as the creator?
I am holding an exhibition of my work at Osaka HEP HALL in April 2007. I want to exhibit on a large scale every year. A book of my collected work is being published by Little More Co., Ltd. in April 2007, and I want to have the opportunity to publish more books of my work.
I would also like to make a number of stop motion animation works as well.
Please name of the people, things, or phenomena that you have got most influenced by as the creator.
· Mr. Tim Burton, a film director.
When I was 12 years old, I watched The Nightmare before Christmas and I was greatly impressed by it. Ever since then, I have been wishing to meet Mr. Burton, and maybe even have the opportunity to create something with him!
