Comment

This work is our 8th website which we planned and created for the contents for JST Virtual Science Center. Various data on the nature, geography and geological condition of the Japanese archipelago will be developed interactively on the map when a user touches it. We would be happy if a user could enjoy unexpected discovery with a mouse in their hand. We would be deeply grateful to the people from the Japan Science and Technology Agency for giving us an opportunity to create the website.

Reason for Award

The volume of information with depth and the brilliant information design are the fascination of this work. All the information, which is the base of this work, should have been just boring data. But, the creator sorted out these data marvelously and led to learning in an easily comprehensible way, beautifully, in a way that is not boring, and also surprising the use. However, this work is completed as is in the contents and does not have the characteristic feature of the web, such as dynamic production of contents, which can only be possible through the internet. I hope that in the future they will have a reactive conception which reflects users’ commitment to the representation.

11 Q&A

Q1
How old were you when you "created" something first time in your life? At that time, what did you create, and what kind of medium did you use?
A1
A work piece which consisted of a pathway attached to a cardboard platform through which a marble rolled down. I was fascinated with this device in which a marble rolled down a complicated route. It was about 10 years old when I got hooked on that.
Q2
What kind of tools or medium do you use now? Please tell us the reason why you choose them.
A2
A Mac. I have been with it for long time, for more than 15 years.
Q3
If you could get "dream tools/medium" for your creation, what do you wish to get?
A3
Software with which I could achieve a mastery of all functions without reading any instructions at all.
Q4
Do you have any consistent subject matter or theme through your works? If so, please explain us.
A4
To convey the surprises and fascination of science.
Q5
Please tell us the most difficult or considerable part when you create your work.
A5
What I have difficulties with is a process where I become sure that this must be the right thing and dump everything other than that. What I am concerned with is to hold out as much as possible until reaching the degree of completion which I imagined.
Q6
Have you ever felt that your work is a "media art"? Also, what is the difference between "media arts" and "traditional fine arts"?
A6
I have never been aware of it. Only when I read this question and took a fresh look at my winning-work, I vaguely understood the category of “media arts.”
Q7
As an artist/creator, please tell us your approach, stance or point of view when you create your work.
A7
How much I think what I am creating is interesting.
Q8
What is your motto?
A8
I have none in particular.
Q9
What kind of situation in every day life do you get inspired most?
A9
When I am driven into a corner. When I am on a journey such as when I am on a train or walking.
Q10
What kind of vision do you have in your future development as the creator?
A10
I would like to try to create an environment myself where I can do what I want to do.
Q11
Please name of the people, things, or phenomena that you have got most influenced by as the creator.
A11
・ Korosuke no Kagaku Shitsumonbako (Korosuke’s science question box: Gakken Manga Himitsu Series)
A science manga which I read until the book was worn out when I was an elementary school kid. I began to like science because of this manga.

・Powers of Ten
A short movie by Charles and Ray Eames. I would always feel dizzy by its utter elegance no matter how many times I watched it. I wish I could create something like this where I can give a full-length portrait utilizing just one parameter. I quite like the Powers of Ten book version, too.

・The Way Life Works (Mahrlon Hoagland & Bert Dodson)
An illustration book which explains the mechanisms of life and the plot of evolution in a way easy to understand. About ten years ago, I encountered this book as a reference when I created a website for the first time. This taught me some techniques for when I explain something using pictorial cuts and letters.
