Comment

Thank you for selecting this work for an Excellence Prize. These days I see an increasing number of people playing MONSTER HUNTER FREEDOM 2, which makes me realize that it is now being experienced by many people. It is my pleasure to think people can enjoy this game with their friends. The Monster Hunter project team will continue to do its best to produce more great games in the future. Thank you for your continued support.

Reason for Award

It used to be the case that when people grew out of Pokémon, they tended to grow out of video games altogether; it was a big problem with the potential to create stagnation for the game media. Times have changed with the appearance of the MONSTER HUNTER FREEDOM series, which is thought to be promoting the Play Station Portable as a game console, but there is more to it than that. The series offers exhilarating action, the satisfaction of collecting and producing items, as well as multi player collaboration through wireless communication; by themselves, each of these factors has been seen before, but combined in one game, they exhibit a powerful attraction. This can be seen as a model example of game production.

8 Questions for Award-winners

Q1
What has lead you to “create a work”?
A1
My desire was always to surprise and please the people who choose to play the games I created. I believe that it is a direct result of this desire that I am now involved in the sort of work that I am.
Q2
What tools do you use the most at present?
A2
The PC in my office. However, none of us know when we will have an idea, so when I am away from my office, I often use my mobile phone to email an idea to my company PC.
Q3
What do you place greatest value on in your work?
A3
It is important that the creators enjoy working on them. I believe that the environment and degree of mental leeway provided are important factors in the production of good work.
Q4
What personal concept do you keep throughout your creative activities?
A4
I am always conscious of “the relationship between circumstances and game play.” I think that video games these days are played under many different circumstances; people can play with a fixed console or a portable console; they can play in their bedroom or in a living room; they can indulge in individual play or they can happily involve many people.
Even the same game can be perceived differently, depending on the player's circumstances, which is why I take such things into consideration when I work on the production of a game.
Q5
When you create a work, in what way do you think of a presentation using technologies or media as a means to communicate?
A5
Technology and media share the same root, and they are an important means of conveying my intended world view through my work.
Q6
Could you name a person, a work, or an event that you have been influenced by the most?
A6
All the games I have ever played and all the books I have ever read. It seems, especially, I could derive greater excitement and wonder from the games and manga books I read in my childhood. I believe those experiences now help me with my job.
Q7
What kind of work would you like to create in the future?
A7
As I mentioned before, the circumstances in which a game is played can vary. Therefore, I always try to imagine people playing the games, and seek to accommodate factors suitable for their circumstances into the game play experience.
Q8
What is the meaning or importance of “to create” for you?
A8
“That my works are enjoyed by the players and that I enjoy working on them.” Nothing else.
