There were screenings of film works spanning a wide range of genres. These included selected works in each division of the 2007 [11th] Japan Media Arts Festival, distinguished works in the Animation Division of the 13th Computer Graphics Contest for Students, as well as outstanding works for the screen from overseas media art festivals.

Screened footage included scenery filmed from a fixed-point, construction frameworks projected from inside and composed in multiple layers, motion graphics, and computer graphic images. The works, which incorporated various ideas and technologies, made a positive impression on the audiences.

The Entertainment Division attracted many different kinds of screen image works including music videos, CMs, and short movies. Attention was focused on works that gave the audience new possibilities for entertainment, transcending the framework of advertisements.

Set in Tokyo in the late 40s of the Showa era (the early 1970s), this is a love story of a young couple living together. Red Colored Elegy, the best-known work of HAYASHI Seiichi, serialized in monthly Manga Garo, was given new life as a short animation fusing avant-garde visuals and music by a new method of presentation media called “Ganime.”

This is a work directed by HARA Keiichi that uses the friendship between Coo, a kappa child, and a human boy to depict humanity and ugliness, frightening aspects and distortions of human society, and the importance of family. Based on an original book by KOGURE Masao, this work was created after the project went through a 20-year gestation period. It has won wide acclaim in various spheres outside of this festival.

This is a 3-D animation that took a whole year to create. Avoiding grandiose expressions, the creator tries to let the images speak for themselves, as they unfold in a series of disinterested and delicate cuts.

[ Media Art in the World ] SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater

The original full version of Electronic Theater was screened in a high-resolution digital theater. Also, as a special program, there was a presentation by Mr. Paul Debevec, who developed the CG technologies used in films including The Matrix.
