“Award Winners Symposia” with award winners and Jury members of 2007 [11th] Japan Media Arts Festival. Introduced backgrounds, concepts, and untold stories of production of award-winning works; also summed up this year's Festival by division.
Professor HARADA Daizaburo, the Head of Jury, interviewed Ms Sonia CILLARI who creates works combining architecture and performance art and Ms Effie WU who presents video works filming performance about how the works were created and their themes in the future.
Chaired by the Head of Jury, Mr. MIZUGUCHI Tetsuya, award winners who won prizes with their game works, including the Grand Prize winner Mr. OTA Keizo (Nintendo) with Wii Sports, Mr. TSUJIMOTO Ryozo (Capcom), and Mr. KOJIMA Hideo (KONAMI) from the Excellence prize winners, discussed concepts of their works and background of their production.
This symposium invited Mr. TANAKA Hideo of Have you seen it? and Mr. TESHIGAWARA Kazumasa of DAYDREAM from among the Excellence Prize winners as guests, and Mr. FUKUI Shinzo and Mr. TANAKA Hideyuki as presenters. Discussion expanded on the future of the web as a new medium.
Participation by the Grand Prize winner Mr. HARA Keiichi with Summer Days with Coo, an Excellence Prize winner Mr. YAMAMURA Koji with Franz Kafka's A COUNTRY DOCTOR, and Mr. TSUJI Masaki, the Special Achievement Prize winner, an animation scriptwriter and mystery writer, hidden stories of each artist�s production were introduced under the chair of Mr. SUZUKI Shinichi, the Head of Jury of the Division.
The Head of Jury Mr. Monkey Punch and member of the Jury Mr. Shiriagari Kotobuki discussed the story structure of the works and collecting information with Mr. TAKETOMI Kenzi of Suzuki Sensei and Ms SHIRAI Yumiko of Tenken-sai among prize winners.
Theme Symposia — discussions on a variety of themes related to media arts. Artists, technical experts, researchers, curators, educators, and others participated and talked.
Invited guests from two media art festivals held in Asian countries, Seoul International Media Art Biennale and Media Art China, curator Ms HASEGAWA Yuko chaired the discussion on potentiality and perspective of art festivals in Asia.
Professor HARASHIMA Hiroshi of University of Tokyo Graduate School, chairperson, artists Mr. SUZUKI Yasuhiro and Ms KUNOH Kyoko, and Mr. SAKANE Itsuo, honorary president of IAMAS, reviewed history of art, such as the influence of science and technology on art.
Manga artist Ms SATONAKA Machiko chaired the symposium which invited Mr. MATSUTANI Takamasa, the president of Tezuka Productions and Professor HAMANO Yasuki of University of Tokyo Graduate School and exchanged opinions on evaluation and actual conditions of Japanese mangas in the world as well as future issues of the manga industry.
Interviews with award winners of the 2007 [11th] Japan Media Arts Festival and chairpersons of world media art festivals. For the former, the backgrounds of production of award-winning works, their objectives for the future, and messages for people who are hoping to become artists, and for the latter, film industry in the future and other issues were discussed.
