"Media arts" - changing together with advances in technology and media. Works of art, animation, films, games, web works, manga and others selected from among 2,146 entries from 44 countries and regions will be exhibited in one hall. About 170 Award-winning works and works recommended by the Jury will be introduced.

[Art Division]
This year was epoch-making in that we received more than 1000 entries for the Art Division. Media technologies exist for conveying messages to people. Visitors will encounter a variety of art works gathered from across the world that will give them a new perspective on this idea.

[Entertainment Division]

From privately produced short animations to commercially produced long animations including films for theaters and television, high-level animation works in various genres are featured. Valuable materials including storyboards and scenarios are exhibited.

[Manga Division]
It is said that manga scene is now facing a major turning point. All of the selected works make us feel the depth and the large scale of manga culture. Together with an exhibition of valuable original drawings by artists, a browsing space for manga was set up where visitors were free to read and browse through award-winning works and jury-recommended works.

The Computer Graphics Contest for Students has become established as a stepping-stone in the field of media arts. Outstanding works selected from among 1,017 works entered into three divisions, i.e. Still Division, Animation Division, and Interactive Division will be exhibited. We hope you will visit and view the works, which were created with the ideas and passions that only students can have. The award ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 7, 2009 at the Auditorium of The National Art Center, Tokyo.

This feature reports on newly born media arts festivals that continue to grow in the world. It introduces major festivals in the US, Europe, Asia, and Oceania with projected images and panels. Introducing these worldwide festivals will help in the attempt to figure out what media arts are in Japan.

* The Screening will take place both at the Auditorium on the 3rd floor and the Main Theater in the exhibition hall.
* Tickets will be handed out in order of arrival in the reception area of the Auditorium on the 3rd floor at 10:00 p.m. on the day the Symposium is scheduled.
