22009 [13th] Japan Media Arts Festival Call for Applications Contest Information

Thursday, 16 July 2009 to Friday, 25 September 2009 (arrival due not later than the closing date)

Divisions

<Art Division>

Interactive Art, Installation, Visual Image, Still Image (including digital photograph), Web Work, etc.

<Entertainment Division>

Game, Play Equipment, Visual Image (VFX, CM, MV, etc.), Character, Web Work, etc.

<Animation Division>

Long Animation (Movie, TV, Original Video Animation), Short Animation, etc.

<Manga Division>

Story Manga, Frame Manga, Web Manga, Independent Manga, etc.

We are inviting submissions of work using new media technologies such as computer, video, and the Internet. Regarding animation and manga, not only digital works but also works using existing methods are welcomed. The competition is open to both professionals as well as amateurs, commercial and non-commercial works without distinction.

Prizes

One Grand Prize, four Excellence Prizes and one Encouragement Prize are awarded in recognition of works of outstanding artistry and creativity in each division. Based on the recommendations of the jury, one Special Achievement Prize is presented to the artist who has made significant contributions to the field of media arts.

[Excellence Prize] Certificate (Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister's Prize), Trophy, Extra Prize of 300,000 yen
[Encouragement Prize] Certificate (Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister's Prize), Trophy, Extra Prize of 150,000 yen

Awards Ceremony and Exhibition

[Prize Ceremony] Tuesday, 2 February 2010
[Award-winning Works Exhibition] Wednesday, 3 February 2010 to Sunday, 14 February 2010 At The National Art Center, Tokyo (7-22-2, Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan)

  • At the exhibition of award-winning works, excellent works recommended by the Jury will also be exhibited.
  • The award-winning works will be introduced on the official website.
  • Awardees will be notified of their honors by the secretariat by the beginning of December 2009.
  • The awardees may be requested to submit high-resolution data or videos for the exhibition and other purposes.

Application Eligibility

  • Your work must have been produced or released between 27 September 2008 and 25 September 2009. Works that has been updated during this period is also eligible for application.
  • Regarding to the Manga Division, works currently being serialized in magazines are acceptable.
  • It can be applied that works created by professionals as well as amateurs, commercial and non-commercial works without distinction.
  • Themes, contents and techniques are free in all divisions.
  • Works that has been applied for, or has won Prizes in, other contests is also eligible.
  • There is no restriction on the number of works that can be applied. However, a work should not be entered in more than one division.

* The registration on the website is not enough. In order to complete the application, you must send your submission to the secretariat office.

Cautionary Notes

  • In principle, a submission will not be returned. Please also note that an applicant will not receive a confirmation of the submission.
  • Although there is no application fee, all costs incurred in connection with the application will be borne entirely by the applicant.
  • Although we (the organizers) will do our utmost to treat the submission with the respect it deserves, please be aware that we will pay no compensation whatsoever for any unexpected damage or loss that might occur. (If necessary, we recommend that you arrange to have your entry insured.)
  • We will not respond to any inquiries concerning the screening process or the results of the contest.
  • The copyright of any award-winning works will belong to the applicant. In order to announce the results of the contest and engage in other relevant activities, we reserve the right to publicly screen, broadcast, reproduce, print, exhibit, or otherwise distribute the work, or upload the work to the official website at no charge, and the applicant shall consent thereto. The same shall apply in the event that PR for the award-winning works exhibition, hosting a traveling exhibition and screening, publicity for Japan Media Arts Festival, or similar event is undertaken.
  • All applicants must hold the copyrights of the applying works or must have permission from the copyright holders to apply the works to the festival.
  • When the applying work contains art works such as art, film, photography, or music which have copyrights, the applicants have to obtain permission to use the art works from the copyright owner before submitting. In the event that an assertion of infringement of right or claim for compensation is made by a third party, the applicant will be required to respond on his or her own responsibility. We accept no responsibility whatsoever for the contents of the submitted work.
  • The applicant shall be deemed to have agreed to these contest regulations on submitting his or her work.

Handling of Personal Information

Recognizing the importance of the protection of privacy, Japan Media Arts Festival will handle personal information in accordance with the following policy so as to prevent leaks, diversion, or falsification, etc. of personal information.

1.Purpose of usage of personal information

The personal information of applicants to this contest will be used only within the scope of purpose for the usage as follows:

  • (1) To announce the results of this contest
  • (2) To give information about points to be checked on the works entered
  • (3) Statistical analysis to help improve this contest
  • (4) To offer information related to this contest (If an applicant does not wish to receive this information, it shall be terminated by mutual agreement.)
  • (5) To announce the awardees of this contest on the official website or in the mass media (the work, name, affiliation, etc.)

Apart from the above purposes, the personal information may be used within the scope given by the assent of the individual.

2.Disclosure and provision to third parties

We shall not disclose or provide personal information of this contest to third parties apart from subcontractors within the necessary scope of usage in order to accomplish the purposes for such usage without the assent of the individual. An exception to the above will be made in cases where it is necessary to disclose such information to protect human life, body or assets when it is difficult to gain the agreement of the individual and/or the law requires disclosure of personal information.

3.Information Security Administration

Personal information of applicants to this contest shall be managed and protected in an appropriate manner.

The aforementioned contents of "Handling of Personal Information" shall be thought to have the agreement of the applicant himself/herself and/or the creator who is indicated on the entry through the website.
