Award winners and Jury members of the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival will introduce the background, concepts, and untold stories of the production of award-winning works. They will also sum up this year's Festival by division.

The relationship between manga and art is cross-disciplinary, and is discussed from the individual point of view of each participant. What role does manga play in contemporary Japanese culture? What sort of influence has manga had on contemporary art? Can manga be art? Through the discussion of a variety of topics, this symposium will seek a new relationship between manga and museums.

Directors and curators of foreign festivals and museums, and cultural interpreters discuss "culture" from a global perspective. This symposium looks at the shape of culture, which is changing to keep pace with development of technologies, and the diversity of culture in an era of globalization. It seeks what should be done to create a new culture and considers the question of cooperation on a global scale.

Curators of museums in Japan who are active in the field of media arts discuss the relationship between media arts and museums. How do they assess genres that have not been evaluated? What is the role of museums in the new cultural sphere? Taking these as its topics, the symposium seeks new possibilities in exploring the relationship between media arts and museums.

This symposium considers the nature of media arts by splitting the name into its two components -- "media" and "arts" -- and rethinking each of them. What is media? What is art? Taking these as its subjects, this symposium discusses the relationship between new media and society, and the relationship between new technologies, media, and art.
