Japan Media Arts Festival in Vienna 2009Commissioner's Address
It gives me great pleasure to host Japan Media Arts Festival in Vienna 2009 on the memorable occasion of Japan-Austria Year 2009.

Japanese media arts works such as manga, animation, games, and interactive art works have garnered widespread popularity in many countries in recent years, and have become a crucial factor in helping people all over the world develop an awareness of contemporary Japanese culture.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs has hosted Japan Media Arts Festival as a comprehensive festival to reward media arts since 1997, and it celebrates its 13th anniversary this year.

Japan Media Arts Festival has been cultivated exchanges between Japan and Austria in the field of media arts through participating in Ars Electronica in Linz. It is therefore very significant that Austria is the first country in Europe that we host overseas exhibitions.

This exhibition is based on the theme of “OTO – der Klang” in tribute to its being held in Vienna, the city of music. It displays and screens selected works mainly from award-winning works from past exhibitions of Japan Media Arts Festival. We hope you will be able to enrich your understanding of Japan through experiencing representations unique to Japanese people, who since ancient times have lived in a country with varied seasons and rich natural environment, and have acquired a distinctive sense of and sensitivity toward sound.

There will also be symposiums and workshops held during the exhibition. I hope these events will stimulate a great deal of interchange between Japan and Austria in the future.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to everyone in Japan and Austria who was involved in organizing this exhibition for their tireless efforts.
