In the 12th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2008, many media arts works whose
motif are OTO won the prizes. This time, we focus on the Japanese peculiar
sensibility and expressions to OTO and exhibit these kinds of works and
introduce them.
We shed light on Japanese unique culture about sensibility and feelings
to OTO which were grown in the four seasons and rich natural environment
and the figurative expression which transforms OTO into visual words and
so on. Based on these characteristics, we construct this exhibition through
the works’ expressions with the appeal of activities as listening to OTO
carefully, playing OTO, and integration of five senses. We would like
the visitors to experience these OTOs.
Japan Media Arts Festival has been an annual event in Tokyo since 1997 and in this year the 13th festival will be taken place. The festival awards prizes for creative works in the fields of art, entertainment, animation and manga. Regarding the previous festival, the total number of submissions were 2,146 works and the visitors of the award-winning works exhibition had reached 55,234 people. At the beginning, the contest was intended to Japanese but the applicants from overseas have increased with each passing year and recently we have received the submissions from over 40 counties and regions consistently. We might say that Japan Media Arts Festival has grown into an international festival.
Japan Media Arts Festival has two aims briefly.
One is to designate new frames and values of culture in accordance with the changes of the times without sticking to existing cultural hierarchies. Therefore, we appreciate not only media art but animation, manga and entertainment works such as games.
Secondly, we help that new expression and culture will be taken root in general and grown with the progress of digital communication technique and technology. It may be deemed that new culture is disconnected to traditional culture but Japan Media Arts Festival has tried to link the gap. We think that this activity helps to grow an originality in new field of culture.
